Hello! Maui dogs available for adoption in SoCal

HAWTHORNE, CA – A special delivery has arrived in Southern California with the Maui Humane Society Aloha Wings.

The animal transfer program began in 2017 and brings available dogs to Maui for adoption in Southern California. And on Saturday, the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals of Los Angeles will host a dog adoption event.

“Although every effort is made to find homes in Hawaii, there simply aren’t enough adopters available on the island to welcome all the pets,” according to the spcLA. “The spcaLA is uniquely qualified to understand this issue, having established Air Chihuahua in 2014. Air Chihuahua flies small breed dogs to other parts of the country where they are in demand.”

Animal shelters work together to help place animals in homes.

“Maui has called out for help, and we are in a position to respond,” said spcaLA president Madeline Bernstein in a statement. “We’ve transported hundreds of animals over the years, so we’re happy to return the favor.”

To ensure the integrity of the spcaLA’s current canine population, Maui dogs have received preliminary health checks from spcaLA medical staff, as well as age-appropriate vaccinations. spcaLA operates two adoption centers in Los Angeles County. Most of the animals available for adoption are lost and unclaimed animals primarily from nine municipal shelters and, space permitting, other shelters outside of their contracted network.

Maui dogs range in age from 2 months to 4 years and are available for adoption at 11 a.m. Saturday at spcaLA PD Pitchford Companion Animal Village & Education Center7700 East Spring Street, Long Beach.

Adoption will be on a first come, first served basis.

Potential adopters can save time by completing an online application at spcaLA.com/adopt. All adopters must meet spcaLA adoption requirements and pay an adoption fee.
