Check Your Yard for Nests This Spring in Illinois
Spring has finally arrived in Illinois and the sound of running lawn mowers can be heard everywhere you go. Before turning the mower back on in the next few weeks, can you promise to do one important thing for me? Check your yard for rabbit nests!
Check your yard for rabbit’s nests and avoid heartbreak
Yesterday afternoon, I experienced something tragic. This story doesn’t involve a lawn mower, but I’ll spare you the gory details and show you just this…
This is my dog Brooks with a prize he caught yesterday and was very proud of. Needless to say I was less than impressed.
Unfortunately, this photo was not the beginning of my tragic story, it was only the continuation of what I had experienced two hours before.
The sad story of Peter Rabbit’s baby
Coming home from work yesterday, I left our Gentry pup outside. He arrived about 15 minutes later and disappeared somewhere in the house. When I called him a few minutes later, he came to spit a bunch of bloody guts at my feet. I nearly threw up while cleaning up the remains of what I assumed was a mouse, but it wasn’t until Brooks brought me his prize several hours later that I realized we had a baby bunny situation between our hands.
I’ll spare you all the details of what happened after taking that picture of Brooks, but I’ll tell you this, he didn’t kill the baby bunny, and I quickly had to locate the nest he was in had stolen the rabbit.
What does a rabbit’s nest look like?
Finding rabbit nests in your garden in the spring is a common occurrence, but this has never happened to me before. Here’s what you need to look for so you don’t have a dead baby bunny situation on your hands and have your eyes cry…
Here’s what to do if you find a nest in your yard reconnectwithnature.org;
If you have a rabbit’s nest in your yard, don’t disturb it. People often think that the babies have been abandoned, but the mother rabbit usually only visits the babies to nurse them twice a day, once in the morning and once in the evening.
I now feel even worse for the mama rabbit who came back to our yard last night to find two of her babies missing. The Reconnect With Nature article also says to keep dogs and other animals out of the nest, place a laundry basket upside down over the hole and place a heavy brick over it so other animals can’t move it, but mommy bunny can still reach her babies.
Please learn from my mistakes and check your garden for rabbits’ nests now… or you’ll be sorry… and you’ll get a stomach ache.
