Birmingham Dogs Home receives huge donation for new veterinary clinic

Birmingham Dogs Home is halfway through the construction of its new veterinary clinic after receiving a huge donation of £ 50,000.

The charity aims to raise £ 100,000 to help fund new equipment for the clinic through its Healing Hearts campaign.

It comes after BDH spent more than £ 230,000 on essential medical care for the 2,500 dogs it took in last year.

The charity says this level of veterinary fees is unsustainable because it receives no government funding. So, in order to reduce costs, the dog home decided to create its own clinic.

Animal Friends Insurance has already kindly donated £ 50,000 for a dedicated x-ray room and equipment at the clinic.

However, there is still £ 50,000 to be raised. The charity has put together a list of how the donations will help fund the clinic, he says:

  • £ 8 can pay for antibiotic ointment, gauze wipes and towels
  • £ 44 can pay for an orthopedic recovery bed to help keep dogs comfortable after surgery
  • £ 135 can pay for a stretcher trolley
  • £ 360 can pay kennel mattresses for services
  • £ 500 can pay for an examination table
  • £ 1,495 can pay for medical anesthesia system
  • £ 9,000 would pay for advanced orthopedic equipment to mend broken bones

The new veterinary center is expected to increase the survival rates of dogs in the care of the center in critical condition and shorten the length of time dogs must remain in the care of Birmingham Dogs Home. It is hoped that this will also increase the rehousing rate, with faster rehabilitation.
